Spirit Bear Rub Tree
In the Great Bear Rainforest there is a creek where several Kermode (Ursus americanus kermodei), or Spirit Bears, live. They roam the island on which they were born and live in peace and harmony with the Gitgaâat people, eating berries before the salmon arrive, and gorging for the few short weeks the salmon are around.
The bears share the same creek when the fish are abundant and tolerate each other's presence. A few times, over the course of several days, I observed the bears walking up to the same tree to rub. It is believed that when rubbing, the bears leave fur and scent that acts as a form of communication between them
