Polar bear tenderly nursing cub
It was late in the day, and I had been standing in the bitter cold for several hours watching this Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) sleep in a day bed with her cubs. The sun had descended behind a low cloud bank and the temperature was dropping fast. My hands were so cold, and having come to the conclusion the encounter was over, I decided to pack up. Of course, to my surprise and delight, a few minutes later she decided to get up and begin nursing! I gathered my things, slowly moved into position, and hoped she would still be nursing by the time I got ready. The light was poor and the distance far but this is one of the more memorable images I created on this expedition. Wapusk National Park, Manitoba Canada
